The “mob” is made up of organized crime families. There were five extremely powerful families that ran the mob: Gambino, Bonanno, Genovese, Lucchese, Colombo. At the height of their power in the 50s through 80s, they were a power structure that was behind influencing politicians and pulling off heists at transportation centers. They were involved in racketering, money laundering and some of the crimes were vicious including shootings and dismembering bodies. The present day mob is still operating and according to a recent New Jersey case, revealed that traditional organized crime remains a corrosive presence in our society and continues to make money through criminal activities.
In an interview on VICE, John Alite, former mob member, stated that there is still money earning capacity, however; mobsters fear being as violent as they once were due to all the technology. Current day law enforcement also has a lot more safeguards in place such as RICO. The gangsters of the mob are part of pop culture and people today are still entertained by the stories. According to Christian Cippolini, the notion of “gangsterism” will always interest us as a culture.
